The Most Luxe Hotel Amenity Right Now? A Good Night’s Sleep
Sweet dreams are made of these.

Whether you’re venturing across multiple time zones or driving along the California coastline, any type of travel can throw a major wrench in your sleep cycle. We mean, trying to get a good night’s sleep in a foreign room without your nighttime basics? No wonder why eight in 10 jetsetters claim they suffer from “sleep debt.”
Luckily, the tides are changing for tired travelers. Many hotels are thinking beyond the plush mattress pad and cozy cushions and making rest a pillar of their hospitality strategy. “We see sleep as a cornerstone of overall wellbeing, not a standalone offering,” explains Edward Costa, managing director of Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa. “The goal is for guests to leave not only well rested, but with a renewed understanding of what good sleep can feel like.”

While the wine country escape’s lush surrounding and wellness facilities promote a serene atmosphere, the hotel is also offering Bryte Smart Mattresses in select cottages. With the help of cutting-edge, artificial intelligence technology and an accompanying app, the mattresses have 90 built-in sensors that help guests customize the firmness and support they need. Costa says Bryte’s mattresses can even perform tasks such as rocking someone to sleep and offering tailored pressure relief. Come morning, guests can check the Bryte app to discover their sleep stats and adjustments the mattress made overnight.
In fact, Costa says many guests often ask about the mattress before they check out. “One of the most common reactions we hear from guests is how deeply they sleep, often describing it as one of the most restful nights they have had in years,” he observes. “Many are surprised by how seamlessly the mattress adjusts without disrupting their sleep, and others especially appreciate features like the gentle relaxation settings that help them unwind at the end of the day.”
Similarly, Malibu Beach Inn outfits its rooms with Sleep Number’s 360 i8 bed, replete with a tablet that monitors your sleep patterns. Not only can this data help ensure you’re getting a good night’s sleep while away from home, but improve your routine long after vacation. “This insight allows them to understand their personal sleep patterns and make small adjustments if desired,” says Oscar Diosdado Murillo, the property’s director of operations and sales services.

Murillo says the property also offers weighted blankets and Theragoggles on request. “Combined with the tranquil setting and the sound of ocean waves, we hope guests have the best sleep of their lives at Malibu Beach Inn,” he says.
If you want to recreate a good night’s sleep at home—but don’t have the budget to splurge on a tech-savvy mattress—Mendocino Cove in Fort Bragg, California, takes a simpler approach with its Scandinavian Sleep Method. Instead of a traditional top sheet and shared king comforter, the property provides each guest with their own full-sized down duvet. Owner Teresa Raffo experienced this phenomenon firsthand in Europe and brought its benefits stateside.
“It stood out for its proven ability to improve sleep quality for couples by minimizing disturbances without sacrificing comfort,” she shares. “Many [of our guests] have noted deeper sleep and fewer nighttime disruptions, along with an appreciation for the thoughtful, wellness-driven details.” As expected, some visitors even shared plans to adopt the Scandinavian Sleep Method in their personal quarters. Each room is finished with blackout curtains and breathable, 100 percent cotton sheets, which can help maintain a consistent body temperature.
“Focus on investing in a high-quality mattress and breathable bedding,” Raffo shares. “Creating a dark, quiet environment with blackout curtains and minimizing light and noise distractions can also make a significant difference in sleep quality.”

Though a well-appointed bedroom can certainly make a difference, some hotels feature amenities that promote a good night’s sleep long before a guest slips into their pajamas. Costa recommends booking a Quiet Mind Massage at Carneros’s spa, which can help prime the body for some well-deserved shut-eye. Meanwhile, Malibu Beach Inn partnered with Seedlip to create an extensive low-ABV and non-alcoholic beverage menu. “Reducing your alcoholic intake is always a recipe for a more successful sleep score,” Murillo explains.
When it’s finally time to call it a night, a REM cycle will be well within reach.
