Lodge at Marconi

Thomas J. Story

Perched on the edge of Tomales Bay in Marin County, the newly revamped Lodge at Marconi blends natural beauty with a unique, albeit sordid, history. Throughout its many lives it’s been everything from a historic technical site where radio communication was invented to the home base for a dangerous cult, but now it’s celebrating a new phase of rebirth as a lifestyle property overlooking what’s inarguably one of the most beautiful stretches of California coastline.

Lodge at Marconi

Thomas J. Story

Built in 1926 by Guglielmo Marconi, the Italian inventor credited with pioneering wireless communication, the lodge was originally a summer retreat for both his family and employees, and a site for his radio experiments. Marconi chose this location for its coastal serenity and proximity to San Francisco, where he set up a wireless transmission station, eventually helping shape the future of global communication. Then, in the early 20th century, the property was briefly a branch of the Synanon cult, a rehab-turned-fanatiscist group that’s since been made into a docuseries on Paramount+. Founded in 1958 by Charles Dederich Sr., who cribbed off of the ideas of Alcoholics Anonymous, the cult has long since faded, but it remains a curious chapter in the lodge’s colorful history.

Today, the Lodge at Marconi has been thoughtfully revamped, blending its historical charm with a vibrant, groovy aesthetic. Designed by Brooklyn-based Home Studios, the lodge has been transformed into a warm and welcoming coastal retreat with a relaxed, funky ‘70s vibe. The interiors feature sunny, muted colors, with marigold walls and wood paneling creating a cozy, yet stylish atmosphere. In the great room, woven tapestries hang on the walls, while stacks of windows wrap around a large tiled fireplace, inviting guests to settle in and enjoy the view. Built-in couches line the lounge, and a library loaded with board games adds a playful touch to the space, encouraging guests to unwind and socialize. And check out the fun tile work in the showers.
