Part nursery, part botanical garden, Seaside Gardens is worth the stop even if you aren’t technically shopping. Wander more than three acres of themed gardens (from Australian and South African to Mediterranean and California native) then head into the nursery for plants and plenty of landscape inspiration.

The Well Gardens

This is not your average garden center. The Well Gardens is a sprawling, nine-acre immersive destination where rare and architectural plants meet antiques, stone pots, fountains, vintage furniture, and outdoor furnishings. Wander the winding greenhouse paths and garden vignettes for inspiration.

Westerlay Orchids

For orchid lovers, this is a must-stop. Westerlay’s retail showroom sits alongside its Carpinteria growing operation and is packed with orchids, tropical plants, beautiful containers, and ready-made arrangements. Stop by the arrangement bar to create a custom orchid moment, or simply wander the showroom for a little greenhouse-fueled inspiration.

A local coffee stop made for slow mornings before a day of browsing Lillie Avenue. Grab a thoughtfully made coffee and a pastry, then take it to go as you make your way through Summerland’s garden and design shops.

Another neighborhood favorite for a mid-wander caffeine reset. It’s the kind of unfussy local stop that fits perfectly between a morning of shopping and a long, lingering afternoon in Summerland.

Feast Café at Field + Fort

Come hungry, then stay awhile. Feast is the café tucked inside Field + Fort, pairing breakfast and lunch with fresh pastries, coffee, and garden patio seating. Order the shakshuka, a seasonal sandwich, or something sweet, then wander the adjoining home and garden shop while you’re here.

Lotusland

The can’t-miss garden of the trip. Madame Ganna Walska’s 37-acre creation is a theatrical mix of rare plants, sculptural garden rooms, palms, cycads, cacti, succulents, and water features. Reservations are required, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to wander.

Aloes in Wonderland

A dream stop for serious plant collectors. This appointment-only nursery is filled with rare aloes, agaves, cycads, cacti, and succulents, with specimens available directly from the gardens. 

Godmothers

Housed in a restored 1920s barn, this independent bookstore is part shop, part community hub. Browse the shelves, catch an author event, and pick up something beautiful to read for the rest of the trip. Home & Garden section is A+.

What to Do

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Set across 78 acres, this is where to see California native plants doing what they do best. Wander the trails and naturalistic gardens for inspiration to create landscapes that feel connected to place rather than imposed upon it.

La Puma Farms

A three-acre regenerative certified-organic urban farm tucked into a hidden valley near downtown. Its 14 garden rooms include rare citrus, medicinal herbs, edible flowers, tropical fruits, an olive orchard, vineyard, and apiary. The Cultured Abalone Farm

Come for the abalone, stay for the unexpected. This working aquaculture farm on historic Dos Pueblos Ranch offers walking tours through the hatchery and growing operation, where you can see red abalone at different stages of life and learn about sustainable seafood, seaweed culturing, and urchin ranching. It’s a wonderfully unexpected way to experience the ecology and food culture of the Gaviota Coast.
