‘XZ Beta’ Multi-Generational Trips Are the Biggest Trend in Travel. Here’s How (and Where) to Do It.
The tips you need to make your next trip a success for the whole family.

This year, families are stretching further than ever before. For the first time in history, seven generations—from newborn Beta babies to Gen Z parents, Gen X grandparents, and Matures—are traveling together. It’s called “XZ Beta Travel,” and it’s turning the classic family vacation into a full-blown, cross-generational event. And while that can sound incredibly overwhelming, if done right, it can be equally rewarding.
Let’s be honest: Herding toddlers, teens, and grandparents through airports, mealtimes, and group activities is no small feat. But with the right planning—and plenty of good snacks—a multi-generational trip can create memories that last a lifetime. Here are seven smart ways to do XZ Beta travel right, along with family-friendly resort picks across the West that can help it happen with ease.

Hotel Del Coronado
1. Choose a Destination That Works for All Ages
Before you book flights, think big picture: Is the place stroller-friendly and scenic enough to impress a teenager? Flat terrain, walkability, good weather, and diverse activities can go a long way in keeping everyone happy.
Stay: With great surf, an abundance of beach-y outdoor activities, plenty of grassy public spaces, musems, and the stunning Belmont Park, San Diego is consistently one of our favorite destinations. The Hotel Del Coronado, situated on the bike-friendly island of Coronado, is a wonderful place to base yourself, as is Estancia La Jolla.

2. Look for Layered Luxury
Every generation has its own idea of indulgence. Pick a place that offers something upscale for everyone—whether that’s a spa, kids’ club, or fireside cocktails.
Stay: Four Seasons Costa Palmas in Baja California Sur is a veritable playground for all ages. With two miles of calm, swimmable beach and endless natural adventures, it also has a complimentary kids club and activities like pickleball, stand-up paddle boarding, and even turtle releases—everyone can be entertained. They also offer babysitting services for an additional fee. There are several high-end restaurants, bars, and nightclubs available with the development, too, so it’s not just the kids that will be having a good time.

3. Create Breathing Room
Togetherness is great—until it’s not. The secret? Enough space to separate when needed. This is why we are pro-nature retreat versus being stuck on a cruise ship.
Stay: Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite, California, offers multi-room Explorer Cabins with kitchens, living rooms, and easy access to trails. Whether you’re up early for a family hike or skipping it for coffee on the deck, this setup keeps everyone comfortable. Plus, it’s just minutes from the Yosemite South Gate—perfect for group adventures that don’t require piling into one van. And they’re dog friendly, too.

4. Plan Flex Time
Not everyone needs to do everything. Allow for downtime, naps, or spontaneous detours when building schedules. That free time is where the magic of travel happens. Built-in options mean no one feels left out, but no one feels forced, either.
Stay: Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon sits on thousands of forested acres with bike paths, river floats, and pony rides for kids—plus a full spa and golf for adults. It’s the kind of place where one group can go paddleboarding while another watches deer from the porch.

5. Consider Meal Planning
Meal drama is real. Choose places with flexible, crowd-pleasing food options, and lots of them, especially if you’re staying at a resort. Also be sure you’re aware of any dietary restrictions of the group so you can plan reservations at spots that accomodate everyone. It’s also super helpful to do a grocery store run at the beginning of the trip so that everyone can have snacks on hand. No one likes a hangry traveler.
Stay: Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, Alberta, has multiple restaurants, casual and upscale, plus in-room dining with kid-friendly menus and fresh local ingredients. Whether it’s waffles at breakfast or Alberta bison at dinner, even the pickiest eaters will find something to love. And the mountain backdrop makes every meal feel special—yes, even lunch with chicken fingers.

6. Book an All-Inclusive
When it comes to simplifying logistics, all-inclusive resorts can be a gift to multi-gen groups—fewer decisions, fewer arguments, and no splitting the bill ten ways. Look for options that go beyond buffet lines, offering thoughtful experiences for both kids and adults.
Stay: Alisal Ranch is one of our favorite spots on the Central Coast for so many reasons, but especially because it’s a veritable playground for guests of every age. From their iconic pancake breakfast ride to the 10,500 sweeping acres of rolling oaklands, this timeless, family-owned property has embraced the spirit and nature of the American West.

7. Keep Kids Center Stage
Happy kids = happy everyone. Prioritize properties that truly engage little ones with hands-on, age-appropriate fun to avoid boredom and the associated tantrums.
Stay: Consistently a Sunset Travel Awards winner, Resort at Paws Up, Montana, offers everything from horseback riding and archery to glamping tents with butlers and s’mores by the fire. Their kids’ program feels like summer camp—only way cooler, with activities designed to spark curiosity and burn off energy. While the kids are off exploring, adults can relax, guilt-free, knowing everyone’s having a blast.
