Packing Suitcase

There’s a unique type of stress that hits when it comes to packing for a trip. What outfits do I need? What’s the weather like? Do I have room to bring things back? Is this all TSA-compliant? Will my suitcase explode and break the zipper? Flight attendants, though, they’ve cracked the code. They live out of carry-ons and personal items and have turned packing strategy into an art form. And after talking with crews from JSX and Hawaiian Airlines, it’s clear there’s a philosophy that runs through their packing approach: Travel light, stay organized, and never check a bag if you can avoid it.

“The best travel tip I can give is to pack versatile, multi-purpose items that serve more than one function,” says Rogelio “Jay” Gan, a JSX flight attendant based in New York. “With the right gear and organization, most travelers can comfortably take a week-long summer trip with only a carry-on and personal item.”

When packing for summer travel, you’re not looking for variety, you’re looking for versatility. This is where pareos come in—a piece of fabric that Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant Mapuana Faulkner calls essential. “A pareo can be used as a colorful scarf, a pool/beach cover-up, or an airplane blanket,” she explains. “A pareo is easily packable and endlessly versatile.” Fellow Hawaiian Airlines attendant Kesha Ahlo agrees. “I love a pareo as a light blanket on the plane, a blanket on the beach, or a cute wrap skirt.”

The same principle applies to clothing. Lightweight, wrinkle-resistant pieces that mix and match save space and mental energy. A versatile cardigan, for example, becomes a beach cover-up during the day and buttons up as a sweater at night. And as far as shoes go, Sarah Mukai, a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant, knows one of the most important tricks: “I always wear my bulkiest shoes to the airport to save valuable luggage space for lightweight sandals or slippers that barely take up any room.”

Organization is where the real magic happens. Compression packing cubes and a packable laundry bag to separate clean and worn clothing are no brainers. For the bits and pieces that live in your carry-on, JSX flight attendant Deborah Blayne has an elegant solution: foldable plastic shopping bags. “They’re my sleeper hits as you can use them for a variety of [situations] including taking them to the beach—use them for wet clothes and/or dirty clothes, and of course shopping, and they take up little to no space,” she explains.

Noise-canceling headphones rank high on most flight attendants’ essentials lists. No surprise there. But another item that kept popping up in our interviews was one specific kind of charger. “A slim MagSafe charger that powers my phone without extra cords while I’m out exploring” Mukai says, is a must-have.

One unexpected item comes from JSX flight attendant Elana Cukier: a portable foldable fan. It sounds minor until you’re sitting in a stuffy airport terminal or dealing with an airplane cabin that can’t quite regulate temperature. Perhaps the most practical hack comes from the reusable water bottle strategy. You can’t bring a full bottle through security, but every flight attendant recommends bringing an empty one (our personal favorite is the foldable Vapur) or similar bottle to fill post-TSA. “Although you can’t go through TSA with a full water bottle, you can easily refill at water stations at the airport, from your flight crew on the plane, and at the hotel gym or lobby throughout your stay,” Ahlo explains.

“Packing this way leaves room for what matters most: the treasures, stories, and memories you’ll bring home long after the trip is over,” Mukai says. And we couldn’t agree more. Here’s the packing list parsed out for ease.
