Each May marks Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which celebrates the accomplishments and impact members of this vast and vibrant community have had on the U.S. and history. While support and recognition shouldn’t be limited to just a month, it’s still a special time to highlight the AAPI experience. As an Asian-American myself, I appreciate all the new things I learn about my heritage and community during the month!
And lucky for us here in the West, there are so many amazing brands and businesses to acknowledge. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite AAPI-owned brands from the West, across different categories: food & drink, travel, home & lifestyle, and beauty & wellness. Take a look at the businesses below—and support them all year long!
Food & Drink
Anyday
Founded by Steph Chen, Anyday lets you make magic with your microwave. The product line helps you cook everything from veggies to salmon to cakes.
Bachan’s
Bachan’s sauces are a Sunset editor go-to. Founder Justin Gill has brought his grandmother’s Japanese barbecue sauce to the masses, and for that, we’re grateful. You can put these delicious, umami-packed sauces on meat, fish, veggies, dumplings, and even pizza.
Bondle
Duyen Ha came up with the idea for Bondle while she was attending culinary school in Paris and working at some famous French restaurants. She had the idea of bringing the best French wines straight to consumers’ doors. Now the brand features a curated collection of French wines in both standard and magnum format.
Brightland
You really can’t go wrong with Brightland’s high-quality olive oils in the most beautiful bottles. The brand, which was founded by Aishwarya Iyer, has branched out with other offerings in recent years, like vinegars, honey, and kitchen accessories.
CHO Wines
Dave and Lois Cho first got their start in winemaking when they played music at wineries and learned more about the craft. Now, they’re the founders of CHO Wines, the first Korean American-owned winery in Oregon.
Copper Cow Coffee
Founded by Debbie Wei Mullin, Copper Cow Coffee makes it so easy to get a great cup of Vietnamese coffee at home. In addition to delicious coffee blends, the brand also has creamers with no preservatives or additives.
Diaspora Co.
Sana Javeri Kadri founded Diaspora Co. in 2017 with one spice—Pragati Turmeric. Seven years later, her company offers 30+ spices and herb blends that are sourced from 150 farms across India and Sri Lanka. And we can’t forget to mention the brand’s kitchen tools and swag, too, from a mortar and pestle to a chai caddy to dish towels.
Fly by Jing
Even though chili crisps and chili oils are essential condiments in Asian households, founder and CEO Jing Gao has really changed the game by helping bring them to the wider public. Now you can find her famous crisps and sauces at grocery stores and Target.
Gimme
Co-founder Annie Chun has helped make seaweed not just something you’ll find in sushi or miso soup, but a delicious snack with fun flavors like White Cheddar, Wasabi, Chili Lime, and Teriyaki.
Hobo Wine Company
Wine has been a part of Kenny Likitprakong’s life from the start—he grew up at a winery, Domain Saint George, where his father was the general manager. After trying out different career paths, he came back to wine and started Hobo Wine Company in 2002, which is now based in Santa Rosa, California.
Hot Jiang
Founded by Bling Empire’s Kelly Mi Li and her mom, Emily, Hot Jiang is a vegan, keto-friendly Yunnan chili oil that was developed from family recipes. The lineup includes mild spicy, O.G. spicy, and extra spicy versions.
Immi
Founders Kevin Lee and Kevin Chanthasiriphan are reimagining ramen with their brand, Immi—offerings are compatible with low-carb, keto, and plant-based diets. We’re such big fans of the brand that we’ve featured them in the Sunset Box.
Kuju Coffee
For co-founders Jeff and Justin Wiguna, it all started with some bad instant coffee while camping in Red Rock Canyon in Nevada. And that’s how Kuju Coffee’s Pocket PourOver was born and became a go-to camping cup of Joe.
MìLà
MìLà makes some of the best frozen dumplings around. Founded by Jen Liao and Caleb Wang, the brand is known for its original soup dumplings, but it’s also been making waves with fun limited time flavors like Corn Soup and Beef Pho dumplings. And the company has Hollywood backing, too—Simu Liu is the Chief Content Officer.
Our Place
Visit any home kitchen and chances are you’ll see Our Place’s iconic Always Pan. The brand, founded by Shiza Shahid, has expanded its offerings throughout the year, even getting into the appliance and tabletop space.
Rooted Fare
Rooted Fare founders Ashley Xie and Hedy Yu are reimagining traditional Chinese flavors and snacks and turning them into addicting spreads. Their Crunchy Black Sesame Butter is a Sunset editor favorite—you can put it on everything from toast to oatmeal to ice cream.
Sweety Ice Cream
Sweety originally started as a mom-and-pop mochi ice cream shop in 1978. Now the next generation, Stacey and Sean Lee and Tiffany Yang have taken the company over and are bringing their family’s ice cream recipes to more audiences. With unique flavors like Vietnamese coffee, Azuki Red Bean, Alphonso Mango, and Ube Purple Yam, it’s a fun sweet treat to share with friends and family.
Wildwonder
Inspired by her Chinese grandmother’s wild herb and botanical tonics, Rosa Li created Wildwonder, which brings those healing drinks and fresh California produce together. The gut-friendly beverages come in refreshing flavors like Mango Gold, Strawberry Passion, Peach Ginger, Raspberry Lychee, Guava Rose, and Pineapple Paradise.
Travel

Cuyana
If you want sleek travel accessories, Cuyana (co-founded by Shilpa Shah) is a go-to. The brand’s bags and small leather goods are high-quality, stylish, and long-lasting.
Home & Lifestyle
Blueland
When Sarah Paiji Yoo became a new mom, she was “horrified to learn that all the plastic I was throwing away was contaminating our water supply and generating hundreds of microplastics in the water and food I was feeding my baby.” She was moved to create Blueland and reduce single-use plastics in household cleaning products. Today the brand has everything you need to clean your whole home: sprays, dishwasher and laundry detergent, hand soap, toilet bowl cleaner, and more.
Boy Smells
Boy Smells (co-founded by David Kien) has some of the most unique-smelling scents out there. It all started in the founders’ apartment kitchen as a candle-making experiment and now the candles and fragrances are sold in so many big retailers and beloved by many.
Ettitude
You’ll feel good about adding Ettitude’s products in your bedroom and bathroom. Co-founded by Phoebe Yu, the brand’s fabrics are 100% free of toxins and are made of its patented CleanBamboo fabric, which is breathable, sustainable, and hypoallergenic.
Kinn
Kinn’s origins stemmed from an unfortunate event—Jennie Yoon started the brand when she replaced the antique jewelry that her parents lost in a home robbery. But even though its origin story isn’t the happiest, Kinn is a true success story, creating quality, luxe, and beautiful jewelry that you’ll want to keep forever and pass on to the next gen.

Hey Dewy
Hey Dewy, founded by Cindy Kang, made humidifiers stylish and actually portable. The brand’s compact humidifiers are great to keep on your desk, taken on-the-go, or next to your bed.
Only Hydration
Many electrolyte powder flavors are the usual suspects—strawberry, lemon, grape, etc. Those are tasty and all, but if you really want to take it up a notch, you should try Matthew Foung and Emily Xiao’s Only Hydration brand. The electrolytes come in Asian-inspired flavors like Yuzu Citrus, White Peach, Asian Pear, and Lychee.
