It had to be both luxe and durable.

Shower Coronado Bathroom by Allison Garrison

This bathroom makeover was a very special project for Allison Garrison and her team at Allito Spaces. Her client was a military widow with two sons—the family was ready for a space refresh.

“They were such a loving and kind family,” Allison says. “The home itself is a cute classic coastal home built in 1990. It has four bedrooms and three baths. It is just blocks away from the bay and the Naval Air Station on Coronado Island.”

The bathroom was originally dark and cramped.

Since the bathroom was to be used by both her sons and any guests, the client wanted to create a space that had a hotel-like feel, but could also take a beating from the kids.

The existing space had finishes that were not holding up well due to use and the area’s climate. “Items were rusting and worn, but the biggest issue was the layout,” Allison says. “When the house was initially designed, it seems as though someone was trying to be clever by angling the entrance which created an extra long vanity that had a barely usable triangular shape on one side. The bathroom also felt dark and cramped.”

“When we straightened out the bathroom door, it gave us the opportunity to create a cabinet/bookshelf in the hallway which increased total storage for our clients,” Allison explains. “Now they can keep their extra towels in the hall right outside of the bathroom and also have a beautiful decorative area to display some of their cherished belongings. “

Allison and team started out by straightening out the bathroom door, which allowed them to create a cabinet and bookshelf in the hallway, creating more storage for extra towels.

The client’s original inspiration was heavy on black elements and a bit starker, but Allison persuaded her to soften the design a bit, while still adding in some edgy elements like lava rock lights. And although her client didn’t want a lot of pattern, she did want to bring some interest into the space in the form of the Arto Brick tile that borders the shower.

A hint of pattern was added in the shower.

“We also chose more durable finishes for the plumbing including a Brizo PVD-applied finish that is guaranteed not to corrode, tarnish, or discolor for the life of the product,” Allison says. “We explored raising the ceiling in the bathroom to bring in more light, but unfortunately were not able to do that and instead we used reflective tile in the shower and replaced the window which really worked to create an airier space.”

The bathroom is now an inviting space that both guests and the client’s two sons can use.

The end result is a relaxing space that feels brighter and luxe, but also has practical features for everyday living. And Allison’s client is happy with the fresh new room. “The owner is in love with the space. It makes them feel more settled in their home and her boys are dying to have their bedrooms fully designed,” she adds.
