CW Stockwell

Since 1905, CW Stockwell has been designing and manufacturing hand-printed fabrics and wallcoverings in Los Angeles. Founded by Clifton W. Stockwell, the namesake brand is the original creator and sole manufacturer of one of the world’s most recognizable patterns: the iconic Martinique® banana leaf, continuously and meticulously hand-printed in Los Angeles since 1942. Inspired by a Bahamian vacation, second-generation owner Lucile Chatain collaborated with botanical illustrator Albert Stockdale to bring her tropical vision to life. The result was a lush, large-scale banana leaf pattern that became an enduring icon, most famously lining the corridors of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Chatain and her son, Remy Chatain Jr.—both Parsons School of Design alumni and design visionaries—shepherded the company to its legendary status for decades.

Now in its fourth generation, CW Stockwell is helmed by entrepreneur and home décor industry veteran Katy Polsby, who was compelled to reinvent the brand and steward its legacy into the 21st century after growing up around the corner from third-generation owner Remy. Under her leadership, the company has built upon its extensive pattern library, reimagining archive designs with a fresh perspective.

CW Stockwell has also expanded its creative reach through partnerships with Sunbrella®, The Inside, Mark & Graham, Sant & Abel, Voutsa, and Atelier Saucier. With 120 years of history, CW Stockwell continues to uphold its longstanding values of quality and craft; a spirit of exuberant, not-so-serious design; and a commitment to constant innovation.
