Whether you spend your time tackling a never-ending to-do list or doomscrolling, it’s safe to say life can be stressful. That said, you don’t have to bring everyday pressures home. Regardless of your design style or square footage, your personal space is a little slice of solace from the chaos—and should be decorated with rest and relaxation in mind.
Looking for some inspiration? Your favorite spas can help. If you’re able to look past the deep-tissue massage and mud mask, you might notice your go-to treatment area is carefully crafted to be simultaneously stylish and serene. Bringing the spa spirit to your space might seem like an exhausting and expensive endeavor, but the pros respectfully disagree.
“The key is that creating a soothing space doesn’t necessarily require a renovation,” explains Diana Pineda, spa director at Montage Los Cabos. “Small, intentional adjustments can make an everyday space feel much more restorative.” Below, the pros share their tips for creating a chill crib.

Sensei at Zadun Los Cabos, a Ritz Carlton Reserve
1. Cut the Clutter
When it comes to creating a soothing space, less is more. Don’t believe us? Just ask Lina Morales, director of wellness at Sensei at Zadún Los Cabos, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. “Calm tends to come from restraint,” she explains. “Give your space room to breathe rather than filling it up.”
Though the property’s comprehensive facility offers a breadth of treatments, hydrotherapy circuits, and bespoke wellness programs, EDG Design crafted the spa to savor its lush surroundings. Instead of filling your space with a bunch of stuff, Morales encourages you to get rid of the clutter and strengthen your home’s indoor-outdoor connection. “Turn a chair to face a window instead of a wall,” she recommends. “Even one small, consistent connection to the outdoors changes how a room feels.”

2. A Tactile Retreat
Another way to bring the outdoors inside is through your soft goods: Pineda says Spa Montage Los Cabos’ organic materials, supple textiles, and muted color palette “immediately puts guests at ease.” Best of all? You don’t have to undergo a full-blown renovation to create an easy, breezy vibe.
“Incorporating natural elements such as wood, stone and greenery can add warmth and softness, while keeping the overall palette muted helps reduce visual noise,” she says. A linen throw pillow or rattan side table can make a big, beautiful difference.

3. Layer Your Lights
Nobody—and we mean nobody—feels at ease under a bunch of harsh, fluorescent lights. A thoughtful glow, as seen at Spa Montage Healdsburg, offers an instant ahh.
“Layering task lighting with softer sources, such as sconces and floor lamps, and incorporating dimmers allows a space to shift naturally from morning to evening,” says Azadeh Hawkins, global creative director at Montage International. “It’s a subtle approach, but one that can create the same sense of warmth, calm and connection to nature.”

4. Decorate With Crystals
If you want to create an environment with a well-appointed aura, show off your crystal collection. “It can create a similar moment of pause,” explains Heidi Smith Mullen, Miraval Arizona’s Life in Balance Spa director. “A place to set an intention, reflect, or dream.”
Place your assortment of precious stones somewhere your eye naturally gravitates toward. The Tucson-based hotspot has an entire shelf in the spa lobby for its rose quartz and amethyst, but a fireplace mantel and coffee table are also suitable surfaces. To maximize its impact, consider placing your crystals near a window so they can benefit from natural life.
According to Mullen, a crystal display should never stay stagnant. “As your life journey moves forward, add pieces collected during travel, a candle, a cleansing mist, or other objects that mark meaningful transitions or life events,” she says. “Over time, the display becomes a story, reflecting where you’ve been, what you value and how you’ve evolved.”

5. A Multi-Sensory Space
A peaceful place shouldn’t just look good. “One of the phrases we hear most often at the entrance to Spa Talisa is, ‘It smells so good in here,’” shares Carene Coulter, director of spa at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley. “By intentionally choosing a scent for your home, you can easily create a warm, welcoming environment.”
Fortunately, there are lots of ways to bring an awe-inspiring aroma to your abode. “Use natural cleaning and laundry products whenever possible,” Coulter suggests. “Soy candles, linen mists and even the hand soap you choose for a guest bathroom all contribute to the overall aesthetic and sensory experience of a space.”
Want to keep costs to a minimum? “For an instant calming effect, you can also hang eucalyptus in the shower for aromatherapy,” recommends Yalda Teranchi, wellness director at Stanly Ranch in Napa Valley.
