Name: Noz Nozawa of Noz Design
Type of work: Interior designer
Established: 2014
Based out of: San Francisco
Noz Nozawa’s colorful interiors are taking the Bay Area and beyond by storm. “I want to continue to evolve to push the boundaries of what a home can represent and look like. I don’t ever want to have a style that you can pin down.” But one thing’s for sure: She’s not afraid of color and pattern—it’s not uncommon for her to ombre a wall or make a chartreuse sofa pop even more by painting the room fuchsia.
After working in tech marketing all her life, Nozawa decided to make the leap to launch her own interior design firm in 2014. It was her lifelong dream but she was afraid to pursue it. “I thought, there’s never a good time to do this,” says Nozawa. “So just do it.” Her first couple of clients were friends who trusted her aesthetic and vision. Fast forward to today and she’s averaging 30 projects per year. “I want interiors to feel joyful and free,” she says.
As the sole interior designer of Sunset’s 2020 Emerging Designers class, Nozawa shared her color tips for the year ahead.
Favorite colors right now: Brown, ultramarine for fabrics and finishes, Crayon peach—literally the color of peach Crayons—for tile and walls, dusty terra cotta. “I love brown. It’s a warm neutral that’s overlooked. It’s a stunning color.”
Color she’d like to see less of: Light gray. “It’s still beautiful, but I still see it everywhere. It’s time for a new neutral. I think we’d all fall back in love with light gray again if we saw less of it.”
Nozawa’s go-to color palette:
Benjamin Moore “Dragon’s Breath”
Benjamin Moore “Orange Creamsicle”
Farrow & Ball “Charlotte’s Locks”
