A round-headed tree 25 to 35 feet high and wide; branches form horizontal tiers with age. Rounded, rich green leaves with pointed tips are 3 to 6 inches long; autumn color is yellow. Early spring flowers are small and sweet pea shaped; colors include pink shades and white, depending on the variety. The selection ‘Forest Pansy’ has purple foliage borne on reddish branches.
