Utah – Celebrate 100 Years of Film in Utah
2024 marks 100 years of Utah film and television, celebrating the rich filmmaking history and iconic landscapes that have made Utah. America’s Film Set.® It’s no surprise that Hollywood has turned to Utah landscapes and locations for thousands of films, beginning with the first movies filmed in Utah that premiered in 1924, “The Covered Wagon” and “The Deadwood Coach.” The state’s red rock formations and wide open spaces then set the stage for classics such as “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid,” “Thelma & Louise,” “Easy Rider,” “Forrest Gump,” and even modern favorites such as “Yellowstone” seasons 1-3, “High School Musical,” “Mission: Impossible II”, and countless more. Among this year marking 100 years since the first films set in Utah, the state also celebrates the 40th anniversary of “Footloose,” the 40th anniversary of the Sundance Film Festival, and the 50th anniversary of the Utah Film Commission which formed in 1974.
