We Shouldn’t Tell You This, But: You Can Sleep in a Refurbished Grain Silo at this Oregon Wine Farm
For a unique and cozy sleep, bunk up at this wine country hidden gem
Visitors to Oregon’s Yamhill County may be spoiled for choice when it comes to wine tasting rooms, but accommodations are harder to come by. Luckily, there’s one wine farm where one can have both: Abbey Road Farm in Carlton. And we probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but you’ll be staying in a fully refurbished grain silo, complete with radiant heating, jacuzzi tub, and sweeping views. The farm makes for a romantic getaway, but don’t overlook its potential for a night of much-needed self-care.
The farm’s tasting room is open from 11am to 5pm for sampling wines made onsite by Abbey Road Farms head winemaker James Rahn and associate winemaker Luke Wylde. James Rahn Wine Co. specializes in Rieslings made from the 40+ year old vines on the Hyland Vineyard (which grows other German varietals as well). Wylde’s Statera Cellars makes only Chardonnay—they’re the only winery in Oregon to focus solely on the grape—and it’s a marvel how austere the wine can be in the right hands.
Though an exquisite breakfast is served at the farm (from 8-10am; both sweet and savory options are on offer), you’re on your own for dinner. Navigation back to the tucked-away spot can be somewhat tricky after sundown (Wi-Fi can be a bit spotty), so we recommend stocking a picnic basket from Portland or the well-provisioned Red Hills Market in Dundee (15 minutes away), or order out Chinese food from Jin’s on Hwy 99W—their egg rolls pair particularly well with Abbey Road Farms sparkling Pinot Gris.
