Spring may have sprung but that doesn’t mean skiers can’t still head for the trails. Heavier snow seasons and unexpected storms have piled up extra inches, meaning some ski resorts have extended their seasons. Savor that snowy adrenaline boost for as long as you can… right until the summer sun beckons beach days.

Winter 2023-2024 featured El Niño conditions, which often means increased snowfall through March in some Western regions. As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” but this month has actually seen snow continue to fall out West, especially in the mountains of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.

For Utah, early May saw as much as two feet in multiple regions and even 31 inches for Alta. Over the weekend, a spring storm brought heavy accumulations to Colorado, including an impressive 19 inches for Alma.

Colorado’s Breckenridge Ski Resort is known for long seasons but unfortunately closed its doors for the season on Sunday. Last week also saw Copper Mountain close. Other resorts across Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and even northern California are extending their season longer than anticipated—and avid skiers were grateful for even just one more extra weekend. Ten resorts across the West have trails open and lifts ready for visitors craving one last run.

Colorado’s Winter Park Resort surpassed the 400-inch mark of snowfall after last weekend’s storm, and the ski destination is determined to stay open as late as possible.
