Meet the Insider: Sanoa Olin, Olympic surfer 

Location: Tofino, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino is one of Canada’s coziest coastal towns, known for its stunning Pacific Northwest setting and access to Clayoquot Sound. We tapped pro surfer Sanoa Olin for her go-to spots across this laid-back outpost, from longtime local restaurants and standout happy hours to surf schools and wildlife tours. Her guide to this mellow beach town highlights all of the must-dos, whether that’s getting out on the water, wandering old-growth forest trails, or browsing shops stocked with locally loved gear and goods.

Shelter Restaurant is a long time Tofino staple. Everything on the menu is delicious. Being located at the Marina, it’s a great location for a full meal or drinks and appetizers while looking out into the inlet. The Clayoquot Campus is home to Indigenous gardens, a carving studio, and a cafe led by chef Lisa Ahier utilizing fresh local produce that locals have missed since the closing of her previous restaurant, Sobo. The new Ombre has the best happy hour in town, with delicious tapas and a great atmosphere for grabbing drinks.

Tofino is one of the few places within Canada you can try surfing. Get a lesson if you are a beginner or rent a board and wetsuit if you have some experience. Surf Sister is a longstanding school with a cool boutique, and they also have a Surf Shack location at Pacific Sands Beach Resort. Tofino Paddle Surf was started by Canada’s first female professional surfer, Catherine Bruhwiler. They offer privates as well as paddle surf tours. Book in for a boat tour with West Coast Aquatic Safaris or Ahous Adventures and take in some of the beauty and magical wildlife the Clayoquot Sound has to offer. You’ll see everything from whales, orcas, sea lions and otters, and you may even spot land creatures like bears and wolves. They also offer half-day tours to Hot Springs Cove. Walk the Big Tree Trail at Wanachus-Hilthuuis (Meares Island) Tribal Park, where you’ll traverse a protected old growth rainforest. During the nicer months, you can book a kayak or canoe trip to the island which makes for a beautiful full day adventure.

Pacific Sands Beach Resort is waterfront at Cox Bay. The fire pits overlook the beach and are the perfect place to end the day with a gorgeous view of the sunset. Wickaninnish Inn is lovely too.
