This New Superhighway Unlocks Mexico’s Secret Beach Town
It had been in the works for 15 years.
Mezcal-loving beach goers got a real gift in the form of the new 104-kilometer superhighway connecting Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido, a recently opened road that will no doubt be a win for fall and winter travelers heading into the area known for its pristine beaches, excellent surf, and regional cuisine. The Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway had been in the works for nearly 15 years, with the aim to dramatically reduce travel time to Puerto Escondido, the gateway to the state of Oaxaca’s stunning coastline. The highway is a massive win for locals and travelers alike; it reduces drive time from six hours on windy mountainous roads to just two and a half, making the trip seamless and streamlined.
The new route enhances accessibility, making it easier for both national and international tourists to explore the area. Experts anticipate that this improved access will lead to a substantial increase in visitor numbers, bolstering local economies and promoting sustainable tourism.
Puerto Escondido has long been a global hotspot for surfers and beachgoers, renowned for its consistent waves and laid-back vibe. The town is particularly famous for Playa Zicatela, known as the Mexican Pipeline, known by experienced surfers to be one of the best breaks in the world. Each year, the annual “Torneo de Surf” attracts top talent from around the globe, reinforcing Puerto Escondido’s status on the international surf map.
But the trip isn’t just for the surfset. The highway winds through lush valleys and along rugged mountains with the Sierra Madre del Sur rising majestically in the distance. The route is dotted with charming villages known for their artisan textiles and pottery, boutique palenques distilling mezcal, and local markets bursting with the colors and flavors of Oaxaca. (Did someone say mole y mezcal? Si, por favor.) There are also excellent beaches ideal for swimming and sunbathing, like Playa Carrizalillo, with snorkeling and diving being possible in nearby bays, making it a perfect spot for your upcoming autumn and winter travel plans.
