JLF Architects
With over 45 years of experience, JLF Architects, pioneers in designing and building houses with reclaimed antique timber and indigenous stone, continue as leaders in creating sustainable legacy houses that juxtapose rustic materials with the best of contemporary design. Based in Bozeman, Montana, with offices in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Park City, Utah, JLF is a tightly knit team of 26 professionals led by 5 principals, working in an architect-led, design-build partnership with Big-D Signature construction that creates clarity and efficiency for clients. That collaborative spirit extends to other professionals, artisans and craftsmen, in addition to always working in close collaboration with homeowners. JLF applies distinctive solutions and Old-World techniques to create place-based houses closely aligned with the natural world and honoring history and regional materials while integrating up-to-the-minute technology, modern steel and glass, and forms that are at once contemporary yet familiar as vernacular archetypes. Rooted in regional context, JLF’s houses respond to a site’s geography and heritage, part of the firm’s decades-long place-based biophilic approach respecting a home site’s specific topography and incorporating the sights, smells, sounds, and textures of surrounding nature. The firm stands by the belief that the most sustainable thing they can do as architects and builders is to construct houses that last a century or more. Made with materials that mature, improving with age, and require very little maintenance, JLF designs multigenerational Mountain West homes that are rigorously engineered and extraordinarily structured to be robust and durable, so they are ultimately timeless, not trendy.
