IKEA’s 80th Anniversary Collection Is a Joyful, Nostalgic Throwback
Nytillverkad embraces the Swedish retailer’s past.
IKEA is turning 80 this year and we’re all getting presents. The legendary Swedish retailer is launching a new collection, Nytillverkad, to commemorate the occasion. The new line hits stores in July 2023. Inspired by the popularity of vintage furniture, IKEA created Nytillverkad as a tribute to iconic past designs. The retailer is taking pieces from the archives and updating them for 21st century living, with new color palettes and materials.
“At IKEA, the past, the present, and the future are all connected,” said Fredrika Inger, Managing Director at IKEA of Sweden, in a press release. “We’ve designed many functional and beautiful home furnishing products during the last 80 years, and it’s only natural that we get curious about our achievements in the past. With Nytillverkad, we are returning to the future, again. In multiple launches over the next few years, we will release a series of carefully selected products from our design archive, updated to match the bold outlook of the next generation. We are happy to bring back these timeless designs truly appreciated by the customers over the years.”
Some refreshed designs include LÖVBACKEN, which is a version of the LÖVET side table (first launched in 1956), that now comes in orange, blue, and light green with an ash veneer top. There’s also the groovy KRYPKORNELL pattern—which was first introduced in 1980 as BLADHULT, a cover for the KLIPPAN sofa—it’s now available on bedding, kitchen accessories, pre-cut fabric, and cushion covers. Then there’s the DOMSTEN stool, which was originally designed in 1973 and called JERRY; the 2023 version comes in contemporary colors. The 1970s SMED coat stand has now been updated as BONDSKÄRET and comes in lilac, yellow, and black colorways. And the BALJA plant stand, which was first published in the IKEA catalog in 1957, is revamped as KULTURSKOG in light green.
IKEA plans to re-release more furnishings from their archives, with an updated twist, over the next few years, so this is just the first Nytillverkad launch. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
