Sorry for the corny pun, but I’ve been obsessed with ‘Glass Gem’ since images of it exploded all over my Facebook feed in 2011 (I’m a garden nerd, okay?). It even has its own FB page.
We got our hands on some of The Living Seed Company‘s kernels in order to shoot this for the magazine last May:

With the seeds more widely available, we finally have our own crop drying on stalks. This is, by far, the coolest thing I’ve grown in the test garden in my six years at Sunset.
We are going nuts over the range of colors, all planted from the same variety.
It’s flint corn (not sweet)—better for popcorn or masa. But we’ll just be using it for all of autumnal decorating (and jewelry?) needs.
