Irises galore in Phoenix
Every April since 1965, Bobbie and Don Shepard have invited the public to visit their Phoenix nursery, Shepard Iris Garden, to see 2 1/2 acres of blooming irises. Among the nearly 200 varieties of bearded iris varieties grown here are 30 that were developed and introduced by the Shepards, including ‘Arizona Redhead’ (which was introduced in 1998) and ‘Splash Dance’ (introduced in 1988).
After strolling through the garden, you can place an order on the spot or pick up a catalog. Iris orders are delivered in late summer, in time for fall planting in warm-winter climates.
Besides bearded irises, the Shepards grow nearly 150 varieties of spuria irises and more than 40 varieties of daylilies (Hemerocallis).
