The location alone would make us swoon. Set on a western-facing clifftop on Washington’s San Juan Island and surrounded by rugged vegetation, this pint-sized eco retreat affords serene views of Haro Strait and the distant mountains of Canada.
But it isn’t just the stellar, secluded setting that has us pining for the chance to call this gem our forever home; it’s also the minimalist, eco-conscious way in which it was built.
Designed by Geoff Prentiss, principal architect with Seattle’s Prentiss + Balance + Wickline Architects, the 623-square foot cottage is built with sustainability in mind. Floors and ceilings are clad in recycled wood, and cedar siding is a low-maintenance choice that’s designed to age naturally.

Inside, the climate is kept consistent thanks to 8-inch walls with formaldehyde-free insulation and triple glazing on the windows. A living roof further helps with temperature control (and, aside from its cool factor, also makes the home fit seamlessly into the landscape).
The home’s clean, modern interiors leave nothing for want. Expansive windows showcase the gorgeous views, while gently sloping ceilings add architectural interest. And perhaps the best part? A large spa bath will make you think you’re in the penthouse suite at an Aman Resort.
