Here’s How You Can Help the Victims of Mexico City’s Catastrophic Earthquake

A deadly 7.1 earthquake rocked Mexico Tuesday — causing buildings to collapse across Mexico City and killing more than 217 people.

While there is not an estimate on the cost of the damage or what type of aid will be needed, resources will be vital as emergency responders are already working to wade through the rubble to find any survivors. The earthquake — which struck Puebla, a city southeast of Mexico City, during the middle of the day Tuesday — leveled buildings throughout the city including an elementary school, where rescuers have already discovered nearly two dozen lifeless bodies.

Many charities and nonprofits are already either on the ground to help with the Mexico City earthquake, and others are coordinating plans on how best to help the victims of the earthquake. Here’s a list of some of the charities you can give donations in order to help with those affected by the Mexico City earthquake:

Red Cross Mexico

The Red Cross Mexico has set up a donation page to help the Mexico City earthquake victims. They have also asked people to donate medical supplies and tools.

UNICEF Mexico

The children’s charity has also set up a donation page. They will be on the ground helping young people to recover physically and emotionally from the earthquake.

Topos Mexico

The charity is a local rescue brigade that was vital to relief efforts for the catastrophic 1985 earthquake that rocked Mexico. They have asked for donations on Twitter for the Mexico City earthquake victims and are accepting payment through online transfer, PayPal or their website. At the time of writing, the organization’s website appears to have crashed.

ProjectPaz

The New-York based non-profit that works with Latino children teamed up with the El Paso Community Foundation to gather donations for the Mexico City earthquake victims. On the donation page, people can decide whether they’d like to donate to the Sept. 7 earthquake that hit Chiapas and Oaxaca or the Sept. 19 earthquake in Mexico City.

GlobalGiving

The global crowdfunding platform has set up a relief fund for those affected by the Mexico City earthquake, giving the option to donate just once or monthly. They have already raised more than $100,000 of its $1 million goal for relief following Mexico’s two devastating earthquakes. The money raised through GlobalGiving will be used to buy emergency supplies, like food water and medicine, as well as provide more long-term aid, according to the company’s fundraising page.
