Beloved San Diego Brewery Expands to Bay Area With a Splashy New Taproom

San Diego’s popular Modern Times Beer has made its way to the Bay Area, with the opening of its Oakland taproom. It’s part of the brewery’s expansion the West Coast, adding to locations in Portland, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and its hometown of San Diego.

The Oakland location joins an already vibrant craft beer scene, which has grown exponentially in recent years. Modern Times bring its own quirky spin to the East Bay however, featuring a brightly-hued, 4,000-square-foot space just blocks from downtown and Lake Merritt. Hot pink, turquoise, and orange are splashed across walls, countertops, tables, and chairs.

Like other quirkily-named Modern Times taprooms (in LA head to the Dankness Dojo, or to the Flavordome in San Diego), this one stays on brand with its own playful moniker: The House of Perpetual Refreshment. (A not-so-subtle reference to San Francisco’s famous Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, perhaps?)

Unlike other Modern Times taprooms, sadly, there’s no food at the Oakland location; bringing in takeout or having food delivered is permitted, at least. On the beer front, there are 34 taps on hand to showcase the brewery’s selection of seasonal and experimental brews, ciders, and other taproom-only libations. Beer is also available to-go and in crowlers, alongside cold crew coffee and bags of beans to take home.

Important to note: Kiddos under the age of 13 are allowed under close supervision. Pets — including dogs, miniature horses, and llamas, according to the website — are not.

Check out the House of Perpetual Refreshment, now open at 2410 Valdez St., Oakland. Hours are Monday-Thursday from 12 p.m.-10 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m.- midnight, Saturday from 11 a.m.- 10 p.m.
