For too long, visitors to Palo Alto had two ways to stay: the perfectly adequate but unexciting motels on El Camino Real, and the luxe and pricey Four Seasons, Rosewood Sand Hill, and Garden Court. A block from University Avenue, the new Epiphany Hotel adds a third option to the mix: 86 warmly modern, slightly quirky guestrooms with views of downtown and, from the higher floors, the Santa Cruz Mountains. In the rooms, you’ll find windows that actually open, docks that let you stream movies from your tablet to the HD Samsung TV, and Illy espresso makers. Down in the lobby, Palo Alto design firm Ideo came up with a cool chandelier that’s really a light sculpture: 100 LED bulbs that are programmed by artists to blink on and off in various patterns. And yes, the in-room Wi-Fi is free.
