San Francisco’s celebrated repertory theater company, the A.C.T., ushered in its second act in spring 2015 with the opening of its new playhouse, The Strand Theater. The building has been through many incarnations since it first opened as a silent-film theater in 1917, but most recently was shuttered for nearly a decade. A $34 million facelift helped revive some of its history, like restoring the building’s façades and moldings, while bringing it into the future, like the Mid-Market neighborhood it’s located in. The art installation in the lobby (a massive LED screen) feels particularly of the moment, given its techie neighbors.
