Cocktail in a Highball Glass

Piero Procida, food and beverage director at the London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills, gives the classic old fashioned more smokey savory backbone by calling for espresso and using rye as the base spirit. A twist of lemon gives this delicious cocktail a savory lift.

How to Make It

Combine whiskey, espresso, simple syrup, and bitters in a mixing glass. Fill with ice. Stir until slightly diluted and chilled down, about 7 stirs. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Squeeze orange and lemon peels, skin side down, over drink to express their essential oils. Garnish with citrus peels and serve.

 2 fl oz rye whiskey
 ¼ fl oz espresso
 ¼ fl oz simple syrup
 6 dashes angostura bitters
 1 orange peel
 1 lemon peel
