Here’s How You Can Help Victims of the Maui Wildfires

Wildfires have ravaged the historic town of Lahaina this week, leaving chaos and destruction in its wake. Airlines are frantically helping customers rebook as residents evacuate and flea to the ocean for safety, and it’s been nothing short of heartbreaking to watch the natural disaster unfold. Hawaiian Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke (who is Acting Governor currently), has declared a state of emergency which will run through at least August 15. Thousands of travelers are currently stranded at Kahului Airport, and any non-essential travel to the island is being strongly discouraged by the tourism board. If you’re wondering how to help the residents of Maui recover from this tragic natural disaster, here are some ways you can assist.

Hawaii Community Foundation

This fund is used to support communities affected by the wildfires, and is currently asking for donations to their Maui Strong fund.

Aloha United Way

Maui’s United Way promises to provide immediate financial assistance through grants to nonprofits at the forefront of relief efforts and to households that have been affected.

Red Cross of Hawaii

The American Red Cross of Hawaii is also providing disaster relief for those forced to flee their homes.

Maui Food Bank

The Maui Food Bank is accepting monetary donations, as well as certain foods, toiletries, and household items. They have a list of items on their site—including rice, canned goods, feminine products, toiletries, and more—for donors to refer to, as well as drop sites on island.

Maui Humane Society

Humans aren’t the only ones in need of help during this time. The Maui Humane Society is seeking volunteers to foster dogs, and is also looking for donations of pet food, pop-up kennels, and litter. For locals, donations may be dropped off directly at the Maui Humane Society location on the island, or delivered through its Amazon wishlist.
