Originally built in the ’60s, the property has a new look that stays true to its natural roots.

Situated along a rugged stretch of Sonoma County’s coastline marked by dramatic layers of fog, gulls, and sweetgrass lies the historic The Sea Ranch Lodge, an architectural marvel set on 53 acres. The property just announced the completion of its extensive multi-year revitalization project. The renovation, marked today by the unveiling of their new guest rooms, comes just in time for the peak of summer road tripping.

The property offers prime access to tide pooling and adventuring, as well as the delicious wine and cheeses that the Sonoma region is known for. But aside from it being totally gorgeous, it also has a piece of California communal history. In 1964, Oceanic Properties, Inc. hired the architectural firm of Moore, Lyndon, Turnbull, and Whitaker to design a community with a lodge at the center based around the concept of dynamic conservation of “living lightly on the land,” starting with respect for nature.

The community still exists, but the lodge over the years had fallen into various states of disrepair. That is until award-winning San Francisco-based design collective NICOLEHOLLIS redid the interiors of property, which now boasts wood structures, natural materials, angled ceilings, and skylights that nod to this iconic and historic property on the coast. The common areas were imagined by Charles de Lisle.

A group of families from the Bay Area purchased the property in 2018 and began the multimillion dollar renovation. Now, the lodge offers spacious rooms with ocean views and out-the-door access to eight miles of bluff-top trails.

Each of the 17 refreshed rooms at The Sea Ranch Lodge was designed with the thought to inspire guests to live lightly on the land, just as the original architects envisioned. The Lodge’s wooden structure is balanced by vibrant details throughout, opening up the spaces and providing a more colorful, current palette.

This does mark the end of the revamp, though; there’s more to come for this historic location. Soon, the Lodge plans on integrating a closed-loop sustainable farm onto the property, adding another layer that nods to the property’s past.
